Na Planet of the Apes (1968) werd Charlton Heston bijna de ideale “laatste man in een kapotte wereld”: The Omega Man (1971) en Soylent Green (1973). Typecasting ligt dus behoorlijk voor de hand: stoere, enigszins norse man die ontdekt dat de beschaving er een enorme puinhoop van heeft gemaakt.

Bij Heston zelf is de politieke omslag opvallend. Hij was in de jaren zestig bepaald niet simpelweg de rechtse Heston van later: hij liep mee met Martin Luther King bij de March on Washington in 1963, steunde burgerrechten en verzette zich tegen rassenscheiding. Later schoof hij sterk naar rechts en werd hij van 1998–2003 president en boegbeeld van de National Rifle Association. Dat beroemde optreden met een geweer — “from my cold dead hands” — heeft zijn late publieke imago bijna volledig bepaald.

Maar je astronautentheorie moet ik toch een beetje redden van de ondergang. 😉 Niet alle Apollo-astronauten werden rechts of zonderling.
