Cleese often called his mother to find her complaining about being depressed. To cheer her up, he said: "Well Mother... if you're still feeling as depressed as this next week, I know a little man who lives in Fulham, and if you like... I could give him a call on the phone, and he could come down and kill you." The threat made her cackle with laughter, and he would use the same line whenever she started her usual complaining.
During an episode of Conan, Cleese recounted how he responded to her guilt-tripping him over the phone. He told her: "Because Mom, when you die, I am going to a taxidermist and having you stuffed. I'm going to keep you in a glass case by the front door. Every time I go out I shall say, 'Bye, Mom.'" Cleese noted that instead of being offended, she was absolutely delighted and proudly told her friends at her retirement residence about her son's post-mortem plans.
Reflecting on her 101-year life (1899–2000) that spanned both World Wars, the Great Depression, and the space age, Cleese frequently joked about her lack of worldly awareness:
"She lived through it all... without really noticing any of it."
Reflecting on his childhood in his autobiography, Cleese described his mother's personality and their dynamic:
"I had a very, very difficult relationship with my mother, who was supremely self-centred. She was hilariously self-centred. She did not really take interest in anything that didn't immediately affect her."
